Reducing Vehicle Crime
Developing effective strategies and exploring good practice
22 September 2005
Despite reductions seen in recent years, vehicle crime remains a volume crime. The British Crime Survey 2003-2004 estimates there were 2.1 million vehicle crimes (i.e. thefts of vehicles and from vehicles) and that further progress can be made.
The Home Office has introduced a new target to reduce all crime by 15 per cent by 2007-08 compared to 2002/03 and to meet this effective strategies must be developed to significantly reduce vehicle crime.
On 22 September 2005, Aileen Murphie, Director, Home Affairs & Criminal Justice welcomed 128 delegates to the one day NAO conference on Reducing Vehicle Crime. The conference showcased what effective measures can be taken. It outlined how to develop effective vehicle crime prevention strategies, demonstrated good practice examples of projects and partnership working, and considered the latest policy developments.
