Using communication to tackle theft from vehicles (December 2007).

This guide, which was commissioned by the National Audit Office following its report on Reducing Vehicle Crime (HC 183 2004-2005, January 2005) provides guidance for Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) and Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs) on the most cost-effective channels for communicating with the public, reminding them of what they can do to minimise the risk of being a victim of vehicle crime, but also seeking to deter people from becoming theft-from-vehicle offenders.

This guide, which was commissioned by the National Audit Office following its report on Reducing Vehicle Crime (HC 183 2004-2005, January 2005) provides an analysis of the characteristics of offenders who engage in thefts from motor vehicles (TFMV). It suggests a number of strategies for identifying potential offenders and helping to prevent them becoming offenders.

Improving fines collection through better information on defendants' ability to pay (June 2007).

The National Audit Office published a report on Fines Collection in May 2006 (HC 1049, 2005-2006), which concluded that collection and enforcement of fines was getting better, but there was still room for improvement.

The subsequent report by the Committee of Public Accounts was published in January 2007. The Committee made recommendations about setting affordable fines based on better information about defendants’ means. This guide is designed to help Her Majesty’s Courts Service implement those recommendations.
