Many parts of Government come into contact with business on a day to day basis ranging from their work as regulators, collectors of taxes and duties to providers of business support, and in some instances as a major shareholder. This section lists value for money reports and other outputs published by the National Audit Office that have looked at how well government bodies interact with business and industry, including the work of the former Department of Trade and Industry.

BERR’s oversight of the Post Office Network Change Programme


In May 2007 the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) approved plans to close up to 2,500 post offices. The closures are known as the Network Change Programme. Prior to the programme the Post Office had a network of around 14,000 offices and in the financial year 2005–06 it lost £130 million.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority – Taking forward decommissioning

 

Decommissioning the UK’s civil nuclear sites will pose a significant challenge over the coming years. Since April 2005 the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has had responsibility for taking forward decommissioning of the growing number of civil public nuclear facilities that have reached, or are nearing the end of their operational life.
