Communities, Regions and Regeneration

 

This sector is about developing and regenerating sustainable communities in England’s regions.  The sector covers physical, economic and social regeneration.   It also covers regional economic development and relations between national and sub-national government.         

 

The National Audit Office’s work in this sector includes auditing the financial statements of the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Housing Corporation and English Partnerships and their sucessor body, the Homes and Communities Agency, the Urban Development Corporations as well as the Regional Development Agencies.

 

We also undertake a wide range of value for money examinations across the sector. We are also responsible for the both the Independent Performance Assessments and the Independent Supplementary Reviews of Regional Development Agencies.

As part of our work to evaluate how well the UK Government is tackling the renewal of the Thames Gateway we explored how seven European cities or regions are tackling ambitious regeneration and bringing sustainable growth and renewal to local communities.  We published our research as a companion piece to the Thames Gateway report.

Neighbourhood renewal – getting communities involved

 

During the course of our work on the single Community Programme we identified many examples of innovative work by Community Empowerment Networks and their support teams. But we also found considerable scope for Networks to learn more from each other.
