Service Families Accommodation

The Ministry of Defence provides accommodation for Service personnel and their families as a condition of service, and to meet its operational requirements, most notably the need for Service personnel to be mobile. The Ministry of Defence has over 50,000 properties across the United Kingdom, providing housing for around 42,000 Service personnel and their families.

Personnel can be required to move frequently, with around 20,000 family moves taking place each year. The Ministry of Defence faces a number of challenges in providing accommodation for Service personnel and their families. Properties are spread over many locations and there is wide variation in their age, condition and quality.

The Service Families Accommodation report looks at the provision of accommodation for Service Families in the UK, including the Ministry of Defence’s management of the housing stock and delivery of housing services, such as maintenance, to Service families.

The report examines the following areas:

  • How well UK Service Families Accommodation meets current operational needs, and the needs of Service families.

  • Whether the Ministry of Defence is managing its housing stock effectively to meet these needs.

  • Whether the Ministry of Defence is providing an effective and responsive service for the occupants of Service Families Accommodation.
