Annual Report Highlights
During this year our work, together with that of the Committee
of Public Accounts, has led to savings and other efficiency gains
for the taxpayer of £768 million; more than ten times the annual
cost of running the office.
Our key results and achievements in
2008-09 included:
- auditing 448 accounts and completing the audit
of the opening balance sheets under IFRS conversion;
- delivering 60 major reports to Parliament,
covering topics as diverse as speeding up planning permissions,
progress in improving adult literacy and numeracy, prison
procurement, reducing harm from alcohol and the nationalisation of
Northern Rock
- expanding our support to parliamentary select
committees in addition to our work for the Committee of Public
Accounts
- contributing to improving governance and
accountability in some 35 developing countries and other nations;
and
- securing £768 million of financial impact, more
than £10 for every £1 spent running the National Audit Office
