This briefing has been prepared for the Communities and Local Government Select Committee to provide an overview of the Department for Communities and Local Government’s financial management in 2009-10 and its structural reform priorities.

The Department’s aim is:

"To create a free, fair and responsible Big Society by putting power in the hands of citizens, neighbourhoods and councils."

The Department is responsible for government policy on local government, housing, planning and fire and rescue. It oversees the localism agenda, which seeks to redistribute power away from Whitehall. The Department also has responsibility for communities, neighbourhoods and regeneration.
