Work in Progress: Is the Department for Work and Pensions achieving value for money in its work to help claimants of incapacity benefits into employment?

Study Outline

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) supports individual claimants of incapacity benefits into work through the ‘Pathways to Work’ programme. Pathways to Work provides a range of work-related activity, incorporating both mandatory and voluntary aspects.  It is delivered by Jobcentre Plus in some areas and by private and voluntary sector providers in other areas.  Alongside its work with individuals, DWP also engages with employers to encourage the recruitment of claimants of incapacity benefits.

Our study will assess whether the DWP is achieving value for money in its work to help more incapacity benefits claimants into sustainable employment.

This study will aim to answer the following key questions:

  • Is DWP on course to achieve its employment targets for claimants of incapacity benefits?
  • Is DWP’s national ‘Pathways to Work’ programme achieving value for money?
  • Is DWP achieving value for money in its work to encourage employers to recruit claimants of incapacity benefits?
