Work in Progress: Department for International Development: Operating in insecure environments
Study Outline
Tackling poverty in insecure countries is important in meeting the Millennium Development Goals and DFID has doubled its support to insecure countries within the past four years.
Insecurity makes it difficult for aid agencies such as The Department for International Development (DFID) to assess needs, find appropriate partners, monitor the use of funds and ensure sustainability. In addition, providing assistance in conflict-affected areas creates additional risks of attacks on aid workers themselves.
This NAO study aims to examine how DFID works in insecure countries, what it is achieving and how it designs and manages its programme including dealing with risks to its staff.
