Work in Progress: Supporting People with Autism through Adulthood

There are around half a million people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in England. This study will consider the extent to which existing services meet the needs of adults with ASD, focusing particularly on the transition from adolescence and the subsequent provision of health, social care, education and employment support to adults across the whole autistic spectrum. Many adults with autism depend on support from their parents and other family members, and hence the study will include examining how well services are configured to provide ongoing support to carers.

The study will also explore the longer-term health and economic impacts of failing to cater for adults on the autistic spectrum. It will examine the extent to which government departments responsible for care services, employment and benefits are working together with Local Authorities and NHS organisations to provide appropriate interventions for adults with ASD. It should highlight how the delivery of services for people with ASD could be improved, including the identification of ways to address the risk of individuals, particularly in adulthood, 'falling through the cracks' between current areas of service provision.

Web Consultation

One of the methods we are using to capture the views and experiences of people with ASD is through a web-based consultation. The consultation is an opportunity for people with ASD and their carers to let us know how autism has affected different areas of their lives and their access to services. All responses are anonymous. Please follow the link to contribute to the consultation. http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1895&a=17525

If you encounter any issues in completing this online consultation please contact the NAO team at enquiries@nao.gsi.gov.uk to request a copy of the consultation in an alternative format.
