Work in Progress: Reducing Alcohol Harm

The NAO is undertaking a value for money study of health services for alcohol harm reduction (which we are referring to as 'alcohol services') in England. This will cover all types of alcohol misuse from hazardous drinking to dependency on alcohol.

Our study will examine the extent of local service provision, access to services and the effectiveness of treatment. The study will include all types of health service interventions on alcohol, from brief advice by GPs to rehabilitation and detoxification services for dependent drinkers.

The study will provide information to help the Department of Health better understand how it can help to achieve the new government PSA target on alcohol and drugs, which will come into effect from April 2008. As well as local provision, the study will also consider how the national and regional structures of the National Health Service support the delivery of alcohol services.

We intend to survey commissioners of alcohol services and consult providers of alcohol services in England. In addition, we will be seeking the views of a range of stakeholder groups, including patients, alcohol and drug teams, doctors, nurses and researchers.

Publication Schedule

We intend to publish our report in autumn 2008.
