Work in Progress: Animal Health
Protecting the health and maintaining the welfare of Britain’s farm animals is
primarily the responsibility of farmers. But the impact of outbreaks and the
measures required to control them can have wider impacts on farming, food
production, public health, the economy and the environment. In April 2007, a new
executive agency, Animal Health, was established combining the functions of the
former State Veterinary Service, the Dairy Hygiene and Egg Marketing
Inspectorates, and the Wildlife Licensing and Registration Service. Other
agencies (including Defra, local authorities and the private sector) also have a
role in maintaining and protecting animal health.
This study will look at the effectiveness of the working arrangements between
Defra, Animal Health and other public and private sector stakeholders for the
protection and improvement of animal health.
