Work in Progress: Departmental Capability Reviews

Study Outline

Launched in October 2005 by the Cabinet Secretary, Capability Reviews aim to bring about a step change in departments’ capability to meet current and future delivery challenges. Each review is carried out by a small team of senior people from inside and outside central government who assess leadership, strategy and delivery against ten capabilities. Reviews were carried out on all departments in 2006 and 2007. Departments are now implementing action plans intended to address deficiencies ahead of fresh reviews in 2008 and 2009.

Our study will examine how departments are responding to the challenge of capability reviews. It will consider how departments are implementing their action plans, the help departments are able to secure from the Cabinet Office and other organisations at the centre of government, and the impact of changes on departments’ capability to meet delivery challenges.

Publication Schedule

We hope to publish a report in early 2009.
