Work in Progress: Planning for Homes
Study Outline
The Government has set a target of increasing housing supply by 240,000 extra homes a year by 2016. This represents a significant increase compared to recent levels of 185,000 new homes a year. Accelerating the delivery of the land required for this new housing is dependent on the performance of the planning system. The Department has spent £605 million between 2003 and 2008 on Planning Delivery Grant and implemented a number of measures to improve the performance of development control in handling planning applications.
The study will examine whether the Department has created the right incentives for the efficient processing of applications, whether its efforts to improve the system have been effective, and how well other government bodies are engaging with the process.
