Work in Progress: HM Revenue and Customs Control and Facilitation of Imports
Study Outline
HMRC process over 20 million import declarations per year from 160,000 traders accounting for £186 billion of goods. It is responsible for enforcing controls over imports, collecting taxes and duties due, and protecting the UK from social and physical threats such as drugs and firearms, whilst making it quick and easy to import legitimate goods into the UK. The study examines the Department’s performance in this area, by covering:
- the administration of imports from outside the EU including the Department’s governance arrangements;
- the Department’s performance in enforcing controls through its frontier examinations and visits to traders; and
- the Department’s facilitation of imports including the information and advice it provides to traders and the administrative burdens involved.
Publication Schedule
The report aims to publish in Winter 2008.
