Working in our Newcastle Office

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the NAO building up staff in Newcastle?

The National Audit Office had a small office in Newcastle for many years. We decided to transfer a large part of our work from London to Newcastle in order to maintain a national presence and to give staff better opportunities to live and work outside of South East England. As the work is transferred, job opportunities in our North East office have increased.

What opportunities are there to work in London?

A typical audit team might include staff from our London and Newcastle office. We have computer and video conferencing links to maintain close contact. Inevitably some career opportunities will arise in London rather than Newcastle, such as working on other client portfolios or undertaking international work. If you express an interest in working in London, we would, of course, consider as part of your personal development plan.

How could I find out more about the NAO’s work?

The NAO website (www.nao.org.uk) does include a lot of information. Let us know when you submit your CV whether you would like to find out more about our Newcastle office. If we decide to invite you to an assessment centre, we can arrange for you to come and visit us beforehand to find out more.

Can I apply to be an Audit Principal when I am only part qualified?

If you have taken your final examinations and are awaiting the results, any job offer from us would be subject to passing those exams. Prior to achieving full membership of your professional body, you would initially be employed in the role of Auditor and promoted to Audit Principal with effect from the date of membership of the relevant Institute.

Only in exceptional circumstances would we accept someone onto the graduate scheme who is already part way through professional accountancy studies. Amongst other factors, we would need to consider the reasons for an individual’s moving employers part way through studies and their examination record to date.
