What is school leaders’ experience of the quality of recruits from school based initial teacher training?

The National Audit Office reports to Parliament on the use of resources by central government and related bodies, for example the Training and Development Agency for Schools.  We have just begun a value for money study on school based initial teacher training, and plan to publish a report in spring 2012.

Our report will focus on whether the Department for Education has maximised the cost effectiveness of school-based teacher training. In particular, we are interested in how well newly qualified teachers entering schools from the Graduate Training Programme, Teach First and School-centred Initial Teacher Training have performed in their early careers.

We would welcome insight into your experience of the qualified teachers produced by each of the school based routes, in comparison with each other and the higher-education led routes (PGCE and Bachelors’ with QTS).  You can click below for a list of questions and issues upon which we would like your thoughts, which you can provide in free text format:
