Improving services for adults with adults with autism: a
national conference
Questions and themes
We were delighted to receive many questions
from people watching the conference online. Unfortunately there was
not enough time to put all the questions to the speakers, but a
number of the themes raised were discussed during the day.
Questions covered many themes including:
- How adults diagnosed late in life can access
appropriate support and services post-diagnosis.
- The importance of a statement of special
educational needs to assist the transition of children with autism
to adulthood.
- Problems associated with obtaining a
diagnosis, issues with misdiagnosis, and the importance of a
diagnosis in preventing inappropriate access to services, such as
mental health services.
- The cost of providing specialised services
for people with autism, especially with significant pressure on
public services, and how money currently being spent could be spent
better and more efficiently.
- Access to Disabled Students Allowance, and
the transition to Access to Work.
- The use of joint commissioning and pooled
budgets.
- The effect of Foundation Trust status on
effective collaborative working and commissioning.
- The logistics of sharing information about
the numbers and needs of people with autism between local
organisations and service providers.
- The importance of involving service users and
user-led organisations in service design.
- The consistency of local eligibility criteria
for care services for adults with autism and the personalisation
agenda.
