Tackling external fraud

An expanded and updated version of the NAO and HM Treasury guide on "Tackling external fraud" was launched by Caroline Mawhood, the President of CIPFA and Assistant Auditor General at the National Audit Office, at the Taking Forward the Fight Against Fraud conference on 24 and 25 June 2008. The guide sets out the steps which should be taken by client departments to:

  • Understand and manage the risks to fraud;
  • Deter and prevent fraud; and
  • Detect, investigate and impose sanctions.

The guide is extensively illustrated with examples of good practice which can be tailored to the circumstances of individual departments.

"I am very pleased to announce the publication of a joint guide produced by the Treasury and National Audit Office on good practice in tackling external fraud. The guide was first produced in 2004 but has now been substantially updated to take account of new developments in tackling fraud in the UK and includes current practices used by a number of public sector organisations."
