Date: Wednesday, 6 March 2019
Time: 08:30 – 16:30
Venue: Lords Cricket Ground, Grace Gate, St John’s Wood, London, NW8 8QN

Local authorities are under ever-increasing pressure to adopt a commercial and entrepreneurial approach to generating income.  There has been a 49.1% reduction in government funding for local authorities from 2010-11 to 2017-18.

Abdool Kara, the NAO’s Executive Leader with strategic oversight of its work relating to local service delivery, gave a presentation on overcoming the challenges to the financial sustainability of local authorities. His presentation covered:

  • The impact of the 2015 Spending Review and the subsequent reduction in spending power.
  • Demand and cost pressures such as population increase and the increase in referrals to social care.
  • The role of NAO statutory guidance in ensuring local authorities can demonstrate value for money.
  • Ensuring the capacity and accountability structures are in place to generate income successfully and make sustainable use of funds.
