As I’ve (probably) mentioned in one of my previous posts, unlike most of the other bloggers on here I work in the Newcastle office rather than in London. I chose to join the Newcastle office when I applied because it’s an interesting location and it’s closer to home for me. As you may already know I’m an active member of the regional society NCASS (Northern Chartered Accountant’s Student Society). NCASS, along with the other student groups, organises events for those that are training to give opportunities to socialise and network, especially with trainees from other organisations. Some events also offer chances to network with students from other professions, such as the RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors). As well as being supported during your training contract and the exam periods by the NAO itself, there are many other organisations which are both willing and able to help. The help on offer ranges from exam entries to social events and emotional support. The ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) is one organisation that provides such support through its student groups. more… There’s a good deal of support for ACA students!

The beginning of the year also marks the beginning of the busier time for us at the NAO, as both interim and final audit visits start to loom. Once you have submitted your application form and undertaken the numerical reasoning test, the next stage in the assessment process (for those lucky ones amongst you!) is the initial interview. For me, this was quite a scary prospect as I hadn’t had much prior experience in attending interviews. I also opted to attend the London office for this, which would normally mean travelling on the Underground, but I decided to walk from King’s Cross to Victoria as I wasn’t a fan of it.
