As well as being supported during your training contract and the exam periods by the NAO itself, there are many other organisations which are both willing and able to help. The help on offer ranges from exam entries to social events and emotional support. The ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) is one organisation that provides such support through its student groups. more… There’s a good deal of support for ACA students!

This week, some smiley and nervous new faces have been appearing around the London and Newcastle offices, as we welcome the new intake of trainees to the NAO. Although it’s now over two years since I joined the Newcastle office, I can still remember those first few weeks of working here. I joined the office straight from university, where I had the typical work ethic of a student, to working full time in a field where I had no experience. This meant it was a tough few weeks and a steep learning curve for me. At the end of last week, the audit certificate for the Department of Health’s accounts finally got approved and the accounts were laid before parliament. I’ve been working on this audit almost full time since January so I’m feeling, along with the rest of the team I’m sure, a great sense of achievement. To celebrate the start of recess and the hard work that final audit required, a lot of cakes and delicious treats were eaten, which was very much appreciated by my sweet tooth. Over the last few months I’ve gained a reputation within my audit team for eating a lot of sugary foods and not much else (you know it’s going to be a long day when you realise you have no change for the daily vending machine trip!). more… Post recess celebrations
