A globally renowned professional accountancy qualification
Our fully funded five-year school leaver scheme leads to qualification as a chartered accountant. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get a professional qualification without incurring the debt of going to university. At the same time, you’ll be earning a competitive salary and getting involved in interesting and challenging work.
You’ll spend the first two years studying for the Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB). After successfully completing CFAB, you’ll spend a further three years studying to become a fully qualified chartered accountant (ACA) through the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). It’s not all about study and exams though. When you’re not in college you’ll be putting into practice what you’ve learned by working with experienced colleagues on a range of high profile clients.
We offer you the unique opportunity to study for the ACA in the public sector but you’ll find ICAEW Chartered Accountants in all sectors and industries, from multi-nationals and global accountancy firms to charities and small businesses. It really does open up a world of career possibilities.
A supportive and enjoyable environment
You’ll join our school leaver scheme as part of an intake of around 12 trainees (eight in London and four in Newcastle) in the autumn. We also recruit about 70 graduate trainees each year, of which typically eight will join our Newcastle office. Our trainees value being part of a sizeable intake and the supportive environment that provides. The office is also a fun and sociable place to work. Our Sports and Social Association (NAOSSA) helps run a number of different sports teams and societies and there are several major social events throughout the year including two quizzes and the annual Christmas party.
The CFAB and ACA qualifications require lots of hard work and dedication on your part but you’ll also enjoy a range of support along the way:
- First class tuition run by a leading provider, giving you guidance and support throughout your studies.
- Generous study leave and revision courses so you can best prepare for your exams.
- Block release at each exam stage, meaning you won’t have to juggle work commitments and study pressures.
- Relevant work experience at the NAO that allows you to put what you study into practice.
- An excellent system of support from NAO colleagues who will oversee your development and assign your work portfolios. Our trainees really value the support they receive from managers, the majority of whom qualified at the NAO and have been in their shoes.
A variety of unique experiences
You will get responsibility from an early stage in your career and will play a key role in helping us make a positive impact on the nation. You will help deliver our financial audit work and will also have opportunities to work on our high profile value for money studies and a range of our other assurance work to help our clients improve their performance.
Our unique role will give you access to people, places and experiences that are only available to those working at the NAO. It’s hard to imagine a more varied, and high profile group of clients which you could be working on as a school leaver trainee.
