Helping people through mental health crisis: The role of Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment services

“Crisis Resolution Home Treatment teams are really beginning to prove their worth in the NHS. They are providing significant benefits and increased satisfaction for service users and reducing pressure on hospital beds.

“However, a lack of resources and a lack of multi-disciplinary support are limiting what these teams can do. And not all of those who would benefit from this service are being considered for it. These issues need to be addressed if the service is to improve.”

Hip Replacements: an Update

“Since my last report on hip replacements three years ago, the NHS has improved its procedures thereby providing better quality of care for patients. There is still further progress to be made, however, including the spreading of good practice, to ensure that the service provided by the NHS is as good as possible.

“Hip replacement is one of the most common and effective major surgical procedures. But there are some question marks over how hospitals are managing the process, not least to ensure that the replacement hip used has a satisfactory track record. Improving the efficiency of postal services procurement in the public sector

There is scope for significant savings by taking some relatively straight-forward measures, and there is no reason why the public sector cannot achieve the £31 million annual savings identified in the report, representing five per cent of their total mail costs, and aspire to cost levels closer to those enjoyed by the best of the private sector.”

“The Ministry of Defence made a major contribution to NATO operations in Kosovo and the professionalism and commitment of our Armed Forces has contributed, and continues to contribute, to the military success and the wider rebuilding of infrastructure and relationships. The Department’s financial management of the operations represents a clear improvement over that demonstrated for Bosnia, and the report details some further important lessons for the Department when undertaking future deployments.”

Ministry of Defence – Battlefield Helicopters

“Battlefield helicopters play a vital role in today’s military. We saw this in Iraq where they demonstrated their importance, for example, in supporting the assault to secure the Al Faw peninsula. The MOD is to be congratulated on the improvements made through the Joint Helicopter Command. However, more is to be done if the significant shortfall in helicopter capability is not to limit operations in the future.”
