BBC Pay Strategy

The National Audit Office is carrying out a value for money study examining the BBC’s strategy for pay.

Staff costs of £1.45 billion in 2017-18 represented 30% of the BBC Group operating costs of £4.83 billion. The BBC has recently introduced new pay principles to be fair, consistent, transparent, competitive and clear. Alongside this, the BBC has modernised its terms and conditions and introduced a new Career Path Framework for staff, and is reviewing its approach to pay for on-air presenters, editors and correspondents, including consulting on a new pay framework.

We plan to examine whether the BBC’s strategic approach to its pay bill delivers value for money, with a focus on senior management and on-air talent.
