Ensuring sufficient skilled military personnel in the Armed Forces

The size of the Armed Forces has been reducing for many years and now stands at 139,000. At the same time, the nature of warfare is changing and the skill level required to operate modern equipment is increasing. The study offers an opportunity to review how MoD is responding to these challenges. Our study will examine how the MoD ensures it has sufficient skilled military personnel to meet its operational commitments. The study will focus on regular military capability.  We plan to examine:

  • Whether the MoD has a full understanding of its capability gaps (and the consequences of shortfalls);
  • Whether the MoD’s current approach to addressing its skills gaps is enabling them to fill critical skills gaps in the current environment; and,
  • Whether the MoD has a credible plan to meet future workforce requirements
