Financial sustainability of police forces 2018

The NAO last reported on the financial sustainability of police forces in 2015, finding that police forces did not have a clear understanding of the demands placed upon them, or of the factors that affect their costs. It also found that the Home Office, the Government department responsible for police services, did not have good information on how much it can reduce funding without degrading services, or when it may need to support individual forces directly.

This study will build on our 2015 work and assess how police forces have responded to the financial challenges they face. It will review how the Home Office oversees the police sector, and how it makes decisions on how to fund and support police forces to ensure they can effectively provide the services that the public requires.

If you would like to provide evidence for our study please email the study team on, putting the study title in the subject line. The team will consider the evidence you provide; however, please note that due to the volume of information we receive we may not respond to you directly.
