Investigation into adult health screening

In May 2018 the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care informed Parliament on an IT failure in the NHS breast screening programme that led to an estimated 450,000 women not receiving their final breast screening appointment.

The Comptroller and Auditor General is undertaking an investigation into four adult screening programmes: abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, bowel screening, breast screening, and cervical screening. This investigation will present the facts on the governance and IT landscape for each of the screening programmes and how risks in these programmes are managed. This investigation will not consider the medical effectiveness of the NHS screening programmes.
