The government is committed to releasing surplus public sector land. Since 2015 two major land disposals programmes have been underway:
- The disposal of enough surplus land to generate £5 billion of receipts by 2020; and
- The sale of enough surplus land by 2020 for at least 160,000 potential new homes.
This investigation will outline why the government sells public land, the strategy and objectives for managing land disposals as well as highlighting the progress made by departments on the key disposal programmes. This investigation will also explain what happens to any sales proceeds from land disposals.
