NHS financial management and sustainability

Our last report on the financial sustainability of the NHS, published in January 2019, concluded that the growth in the number of patients on waiting lists, the worsening length of waiting times, and the existence of substantial deficits in some parts of the system, even when offset by surpluses elsewhere, do not add up to a picture that we could describe as sustainable.

Our next study will build on our previous reports in this area and examine the progress made by the Department of Health & Social Care and its arm’s-length bodies towards achieving a financially sustainable NHS. It will provide a summary of the financial and operational performance of the NHS as a whole in England in 2018-19 and examine the financial performance of local NHS organisations. It will also examine NHS service transformation and sustainability.
