NHS Test and Trace – progress update

The NHS Test and Trace Service provides an essential component of government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its stated aim is: ‘Helping to break chains of COVID-19 transmission, protect the public’s health, and enable people to return towards a more normal way of life’. It seeks to achieve this by finding people with COVID-19, identifying their contacts and encouraging them to self-isolate.

In December 2020, we published an interim report on the government’s approach to test and trace in England. This progress report will provide an update on major changes and developments in the test and trace approach since our interim report (for example, the roll-out of rapid tests) and its performance and effectiveness.

If you would like to provide evidence for our study please email the study team on, putting the study title in the subject line. The team will consider the evidence you provide; however, please note that due to the volume of information we receive we may not respond to you directly.
