Housing is one of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s key objectives. The government has pledged that between 2015 and 2022, they will deliver 1.5 million new homes. In 2017, the Department set out proposals as to how it would ‘fix the broken housing market’ – including through the planning regime – in order to build more homes and make housing more affordable.
The study will examine whether the Department is supporting the planning regime to help provide the right homes in the right places in a timely way. It will examine the development of local plans, planning application and appeals process and the effectiveness of the Department’s levers in the planning system to increase housing supply.
