The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is responsible for maximising participation in sport and physical activity. It is supported in this role by Sport England, an arm’s length body of DCMS, which aims to grow grassroots sport and help get more people active.
During the past decade DCMS and Sport England’s approach has evolved through multiple strategies, most notably following the 2015 publication of Sporting Future, a cross government strategy to tackle flatlining levels of sport participation and high levels of inactivity. This study will examine how far the Department has achieved value for money in its approach to increasing adult sport participation in England.
We will examine whether:
- DCMS has been clear about what it is trying to achieve on sport participation
- It has achieved its objectives
- Its plans for achieving its ambitions are realistic
