We are pleased to have Michael Burke, one of our Newcastle-based students, blogging for us today. Michael recently scooped the Presidents’ Award, Professional Stage, of the ICAEW Northern Society. Read on for his summary of the awards night, held a couple of weeks ago.
Every autumn the Northern Society of Chartered Accountants host a dinner in Newcastle to bring together ICAEW members and give out awards to students who have gained high marks in exams and/or contributed to the wider community. The Christmas break gives us a chance to put a bit of a distance between us and the previous year. I always feel the time off is necessary to forget about work – to enjoy (sparingly) spending time with family. To overindulge (gloriously) on Christmas Eve at my traditional high school reunion. Most importantly, to hope (optimistically) that certain people will forget what happened at the office Christmas parties the previous month. Our new trainee intake have started their first year in college this week. What can they expect? We’ve dug out a previous blog post from Lis that explains it all.
In my first year at the NAO I spent only 13 weeks in the office. Apart from leave and audit visits, the rest of my time was spent studying for the ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant) qualification – a total of 19 weeks, including exams.
