Particularly at this time of year, which we consider the ‘peak final audit season’, you’ll find yourself spending a considerable amount of time on site with clients (final audit season is also the peak period of client interaction for many of us across the office). The summer months can be a stressful period for financial auditors working at the National Audit Office. This is because the majority of our audit work starts a few weeks after the year end (typically March) and clients are encouraged to complete certification of their financial statements before the end of July. Certification involves the signing of the audit report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of the NAO (currently Amyas Morse) and formal presentation of the accounts before Parliament. 31 March marks the end of another financial year, and our audit clients close their ledgers and are starting the process of preparing their accounts. The beginning of the year also marks the beginning of the busier time for us at the NAO, as both interim and final audit visits start to loom.
