"Every penny spent by the public sector is the product of citizens' work. Public money is not a free good we can treat in a way we would not treat our own money. This, and the desire to improve the quality of public services, is what drives me as Comptroller and Auditor General. Over the last Parliament, there has been unprecedented pressure to reduce public spending and deliver more with less. The National Audit Office has played a vital role supporting Parliament to hold government to account for the value for money of public spending and the services it provides."

Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office
