As a central department, the Cabinet Office performs various strategic and coordinating functions – in particular, overseeing how departments implement Cabinet decisions and the Prime Minister’s priorities. It also has responsibility for key strategic policy areas such as national security, and for providing direction to departments to improve how they operate.

The Cabinet Office spends approximately £1 billion each year to support the Prime Minister and Cabinet, to lead and coordinate the government’s response to cross-departmental challenges and to act as the corporate headquarters for the government.
