The Strategic Defence Review (SDR) set out the government’s intended direction for Defence centred on ‘warfighting readiness’, NATO, resilience, innovation and growth. The MoD is now implementing these ambitions through the Defence Investment Plan.

In 2025-26, the MoD’s budget for its core, predictable activities (known as its Departmental Expenditure Limit) was £62.2 billion, of which it used £62 billion. These figures differ from the MoD’s running costs because they exclude accounting adjustments, such as depreciation and impairments, but include capital expenditure, such as on new military equipment. Running costs were £59.2 billion, up from £52.8 billion in 2024-25.
