Background
Government policy aims to reduce energy costs. This reflects widespread concern that:
- UK energy costs are sensitive to volatility in global gas prices
- energy costs are relatively high – compared to both historical prices and other countries.
The Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) has said that producing more low‑carbon energy in the UK will reduce reliance on gas, helping to stabilise prices over time and improve energy security.
In its December 2024 Clean Power Action Plan, it explained that “government will scrutinise every policy choice for the impact it can have in reducing bills facing consumers, as well as value for money and affordability.”
Scope
Our study will look at how DESNZ and other government bodies are taking into account the impact of their decisions on current and future energy bills.
