Background
To increase the transparency and accountability on climate-related issues, HM Treasury has introduced disclosure requirements for central government bodies. Bodies must now disclose in their annual reports the risks and opportunities they face due to climate change, aligned with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework.
2025-26 is the final year of a three-year implementation period, and the first in which full disclosures – including implications for strategy – should be reported by relevant entities. Our report on the implementation of this framework in 2025 found that TCFD reporting had the potential to deliver significant benefits for the public sector but would take time to mature.
Scope
Our work will review climate-related disclosures by central government bodies for 2025-26, highlighting:
- progress towards useful, high-quality disclosures
- case studies of new and interesting information
- common disclosure gaps and shared challenges
- emerging themes in government resilience and response to climate change
