The Home Office is responsible for delivering the government’s ambition of a safer, fairer and more prosperous United Kingdom, and is the lead government department for immigration and passports (including securing the UK border), drugs policy, crime, counter-terrorism, and policing.

The Home Office’s initial budget for 2025-26 was £21.2 billion. In February 2026, the Home Office agreed a revised budget of £20.1 billion. The department’s total spending in 2025-26 was £27.7 billion. This was £0.7 billion (3%) more than the previous year. Net expenditure was £20.3 billion (£0.5 billion more than 2024-25).

The Home Office receives income from a range of sources, the largest of which are visa and immigration income (£3.6 billion in 2025-26) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (£2.3 billion).
