Background

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly expanding in all areas of society. AI has the potential to transform public services and support innovation. The government announced in its 2021 National AI strategy that the government ‘must lead from the front and set an example in the safe and ethical deployment of AI.’

Scope

This study will examine how effectively government is maximising the opportunities and mitigating the risks of using artificial intelligence in the provision of public services.

We will consider:

• if government knows what it wants to achieve, whether there is clarity on roles and if bodies are working together effectively

• how government is currently using AI and if it understands the opportunities

• if government has put in place appropriate mechanisms and support for AI

We will not look at the regulation of artificial intelligence across the wider economy.
