The Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) aims to support culture and arts, media, sport, tourism and civil society and enhance the lives of people across England. It aims to provide children and young people with essential skills for life through sports and physical activity, and through art and culture.

The BBC is a public corporation, operationally and editorially independent of the government but sponsored by DCMS and regulated by Ofcom, the communications regulator. The BBC’s constitutional basis is set out in its Royal Charter. The BBC Group comprises its public service broadcasting and commercial activities.
In 2024-25, the BBC Group’s total income was £5.9 billion, and its operating costs were £6 billion.
