Income generated by the Museums and Galleries

“Museums and galleries are already engaged in a variety of income generating activities, and they see real potential for growth in new and existing areas. By developing the appropriate skills and culture they will be better placed to improve on their existing efforts and maximise the potential of new activities such as the provision of on-line services and products. Such increases in self-generated income will allow museums and galleries to both achieve their missions and serve the public even better.”

Maintaining the Occupied Royal Palaces

“For a number of years, the grant given to run and maintain the Royal Palaces has been static – and has fallen significantly in real terms. The Royal Household is making efforts to be more efficient in how it uses its funds, but there is no measure of how effectively the Palaces are being maintained. The Royal Household and Department for Culture, Media and Sport need to develop a way of measuring the condition of the estate over time, so that the Department has confidence that the future of these national assets is secure.”

Making grants efficiently in the culture, media and sport sector

“Grants awarded in the culture, media and sport sector support a diverse range of programmes, from funding education schemes for children to getting more people involved in sport. Grant-makers do, however, need to get a better handle on the costs and efficiency of their grant making if they are to demonstrate that as much of the money as possible goes into cultural and sporting activities rather than on administrative overheads.”

Managing National Lottery Distribution Fund balances

“Balances held in the National Lottery Distribution Fund are not delivering the intended benefits in the community. Although the balances have started to fall, there is scope to reduce them further and those distributors with the largest balances, in particular the Heritage Lottery Fund and the New Opportunities Fund, can make the biggest contribution. However the Department for Culture, Media and Sport also has a role in helping distributors to manage effectively the opportunities and risks in seeking to reduce balances.”
